COVETED FLAT RACERS

(By

“The Cynic”)

When a fairly good-class flat racer figures amongst the field for a hurdle race the average hurdler cannot expend him, but may outjump him. If Padishah becomes a proficient hurdler he will soon join the list of winners over the small sticks. There is nothing of his class on the flat engaged amongst the hurdlers at the Grand National meeting,, and he has a Wellington. Cup on his list of wins. The records of the Grand National Hurdles shrow that a horse with good form on the flat can be converted into a highclass hurdler. Kulmine was a good winner 'fin the flat before he won the Grand National Hurdles of 1892. Liberator, .who won in 1893 and* 1894, also won a Dunedin Cup, Wanganui Cup, Timaru Cup and other races on the flat, and won the Great Northern double. ' Liberator won at his first start over hurdles. He won the Maiden Hurdles, and followed with his first success in the Grand National Hurdles. Record Reign made his debut as a hurdler by winning the Maiden Hurdles and Grand National Hurdles. He never raced again over hurdles in New Zealand. Record Reign was-a good winner on the flat, , and his form' also included a third in' the Auckland Cup. He won on the flat in Australia when raced by the H. H. Sahib Patiala, .who took him to .India and then on to France, where the Castor gelding broke his neck when running in a steeplechase. Record Reign was on his way to have a shot at the Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase. Coeur de Lion, who ran second to Record Reign in the Maiden Hurdles and Grand National Hurdles, afterwards won the Grand Northern Hurdles. Paritutu was a good performer on the flat, his form including a second in the New Zealand Cup and a third in the Auckland Cup. He, however, had to be content with three thirds in the Grand National Hurdles, but succeeded in the Grand National Steeplechase. Vagabond won a New Zealand Cup, but he failed to concede 171 b to General Advance in the Grand National Hurdles. General Advance Was more than useful on the flat. Horses of a good class on the flat have not been converted into hurders to any great extent in recent years, and the majority put to the game are

too slow to win on the flat, or had worn themselves out, but took a fresh lease of life when they came out to race over the sticks. Comical and Nukumai won on the flat, and the latter was one of the best “mudlarks’ ever seen. Last year’s winner, Cottingham, won on the flat, and Clarion Call was set a difficult task to give him 251 b and run him to a head. Lone Raider. Lone Raider, who is schooling well over hurdles, has more pace than the average horse racing over the sticks. Last season he won over seven furlongs with 7.12 in lmin 26 2-ssec, and over six furlongs with 8:2 in lmin 14 3-ssec. In the early part of the present season The Buzzer, 8.7, beat Lone Raider, 7.8, by three parts of a length over a mile and a distance in lmin 53 4-ssec. A little later Dancing Lady, 7.7, beat Lone Raider, 8.2, by half , a length over seven furlongs in lmin 25 3-ssec. He came out as a hurdler at Wanganui and won the Purau Hack Hrdles with 9.10 from Begorrah 10.5 and at Mariawatu won the Flaxbourne Hurdles, with 9.10 from Begorrah 10.5 Aurora’s Love in 3min 16 4-ssec. Lone Raider was unplaced in the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles with 10.7 in heavy going.
