MAKURI GORGE

IMPROVEN!ENTS TO HIGHWAY DISTRICT SCENIC AREA A start has been made with road widening and the realignment of curves on the Makuri Road Gorge. Altogether, four miles of highway are to be improved, and the work, which will increase the width of the road from 12ft to 20ft will entail the removal of 40,000 yards of material. At present about 25 men are engaged, but it is expected that the number will be increased later to about 40. It is probable that the work will occupy about two years. The area through which the road passes is a scenic reserve and every endeavour is being made to protect the native bush. The Makuri Gorge is one of the few beauty spots left in the district and in places contains some splendid specimens of forest trees.
