MAURICEVILLE

WOMEN'S INSTITUTE BIRTHDAY PARTY. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Mauriceville Women’s Institute celebrated its third birthday in the Mauriceville Hall on Tuesday night. The hall was packed and visitors included several of the younger members of the West Coast Farmers’ party. The earlier part of the evening was taken up with a concert and community sing, led by Mr I. Larsen, with Mr J. Baine playing on the mouth organ. After the singing of the Institute [song a most spectacular' playette “What is her Name?”, produced by Mrs A. Forsberg, received much applause. The frocks and scenes in the were particularly striking. Other items included songs by Mrs Olliver, and the Misses Jensen yodelling, and a recitation by Mrs J. A. Baine, all meeting with spontaneous applause. Anot’her play, “The Grand Cham’s Diamond,” produced by Mrs C. M. Childs, was most humorous.

The president of the Institute, Mrs H, Freeman, expressed her thanks to all and especially to Mesdames Childs, Forsberg and Neilsen. She then called on Mrs P. Welch, the founder of the Institute, to cut the beautiful birthday cake presented by Mrs H. Myers. The cake was piped on to the stage by Mr L. Forsberg. Joyce Larsen, the youngest member, lit the candles which were extinguished by Mrs I. D. Cameron.

Mrs Welch congratulated Mrs Freeman on the success of the function and extended a hearty welcome to the West Coast farmers’ party. Bouquets were presented to Mesdames Forsberg, Childs, Welch and Freeman, these having been artistically made by Miss Ruth Mortensen. . An excellent supper was served by the ladies and dancing continued . till the small hours. Mr H. Mortensen was an efficient M.C. NOVEL SCHOOL EXPERIMENT. ’The pupils of the local school yesterday carried out a novel experiment under the direction of the teachers when they cooked their dinners in a Maori oven or umu. HALL RENOVATION.

The local hall has been altered and improved and adds quite a bright touch to the village after receiving a coat of paint.
