FLOOD SUFFERERS
PROGRESS OF THE WAIRARAPA APPEAL. AN ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING. A large gathering of representatives of social organisations and other citizens met last night in the Town Hall to discuss ways and means of furthering the campaign to assist the flood sufferers in Hawke’s Bay. Those present included Messrs G. C. Dickel, H. E. Pither, S . Munn. A. C. Allen. E. W. Payton. A. Ball. E. Hodder, J. Bevan. J. Bradbury. Douglas Ward and M. G. Mackay, Mesdames N. P. Tolhurst, T. Jordan, T. T. Denbee, A. W. McKenzie, A. M. Munn, G. C. Dickel, W. Mackay, H. E. Pither, C. Rogers, G. Beecroft, J. Robertson, Eric Shaw, and Miss M. Diggins.
Apologies for absence were received from: Messrs T. Jordan, A. Donald, J. Caselberg, R. McKenzie, Corskie, H. Dunderdale, H. P. Hugo, J. Jamieson, H. M. Boddington, C. R. Dahlberg, Mesdames J. Ninnes, L. B. Maunsell, Joblin, J. H. Irving, Page, S. Fletcher and P. R. Welch.
In the unavoidable absence of the Mayor, Mr Jordan, Mr Bradbury was elected to the chair.
The following donations and offers were gratefully acknowledged: Borough Council, use of the Municipal Hall to hold the ball. Mr Eastwood, full week’s advertising throughout Wairarapa theatres. Mr W. Palamontain, donation of tickets. Military Ball Committee, use of decorations. Blue River Dance Band, Udy’s Orchestra, and McKay’s Orchestra, offer to provide the music free. Pages, all the bread for sandwiches and will cut same. Mr J. W. Thornton, all carrying in connection with the ball. Mrs Styles, all cutlery and crockery. In addition generous offers of donations to the supper were received from a committee of ladies. Mr Latham, of Hawke’s Bay, was asked to address the, meeting and spoke feelingly on the conditions and hardships of the flood sufferers. Various committees for the successful running of the ball were appointed. Tickets are now available and are procurable in any quantity from the Masterton A. and P. office, Perry Street, or from any member of the committee.
The meeting wished to impress' on the public of the Wairarapa that each citizen could show his practical sympathy by the purchase of any quantity of tickets. To this end a practical lead was given last night when several dozen tickets were immediately purchased by members of the committee. As the meeting was called hurriedly, some organisations desirous of assisting may have been overlooked. The committee will be grateful for and will welcome any further offers of assistance.
The extent of the progress made so far is indicated in the fact that every town in the Wairarapa is appointing its own committees and that already a great organisation has been set in motion for the smooth running of the appeal.
