London, May 3. The St Petersburg Gazette, a German newspaper published here, states that it is improbable ihat an agreem*nt will be arrived at between the British and Russian Commissioners for the settlement of the details of the proposed rectification of the Afghan frontier, as the representatives of both Powers are disinclined to yield on certain points which are in dispute. Latest news from Crete states that the relations between the Turks and Christians continue very hostile, but the position of affairs is qu;- lv. French and English warships have been despatched to the island for the protection of the Christians. The Earl of Carnarvon, referring to the increase of French annexation in the Pacific, suggested that England and France should delimit the spheres and influence of each country among the Islands. May 2. In the House of Lords last night Lord Salisbury announced that assurances had been received from the French Government that the occupation of the New Hebrides by France was not intended to be permanent, and that the troops would only remain until a civil police force had been established. It is expected that a further communication on the subject of the New Hebrides will be received from the French Government during the present week, stating that France had not the slightest intention of departing from the mutual obligations of the two Governments to maintain the autonomy of the group. The Marquis of Salisbury's statement was criticised by Earls Rosebery and Granville. They contended that the statement would disappoint the colonies, and urged that it was necessary that men-of-war should be stationed at the New Hebrides. Perth, W.A., May 3. The ateamer Otway arrived at Cossack yesterday, and reports that certain boats of the pearling fleet, which were believed to have been lost, have been picked up, having escaped from the hurricane. The total number of boats lost was 27, of which 21 were luggers. The loss of life is now set down at 250.
