The Taratahi-Carterton Horticultural Show.

This show came off yesterday at tbe Lyceum at Carterton. Considering all tbe drawbacks of the late season of drought, it was not at all surprising that the show was in some respects not up to tbe standard of former ones. At any rate such exhibits as were produced, were with a few exceptions worthy scions of their class and as such deservedly obtained due recognition from the judges. Mr Booth’s excellent exhibits of autumn pot plants were really worth a journey to behold, more especially tbe handsome begonias. Cut flowers were of coarse not fairly represented, and it will take some fossicking round this week to obtain anything like fair specimens for tbe Greytown Show, although many settlers have promised to do their level best. Mr Wilton's flowers were also very attractive. In vegetables some fine potatoes were shown, the produce of Mr Moody’s farming. Mr H. H. Jackson, of Stonestead, entered some splendid encumbers and they richly deserved first honors. Tbe only entries in farm produce were two of butter in pats, but neither of these were awarded a prize as it was stated they were not in accordance with the catalogue. In Local Productions. W. Booth, jun., took first for home made bread, and Mies E. Blake second.

For Ladies’ Fancy Work, Mrs W J Burnett took first honors, Mrs Carter second and Miss E. Eagle commended. lu Honey and Apiarian appliances, Mr Jabez Johnson, of Matarawa, was monarch of all be surveyed ; he took first and second for comb honey, and was awarded a special prize for apiarian appliances (£1 sa). Mr B. Sayers entered some excellent blackberries and mulberries, and they were reslly good ; his filberts were also good specimens ; Mr T. ,C. Barnard’s tomatoes were very fine ones, and Messrs Braithwaite and Acock's parsnips, beet, Red garlic were great acquisitions to the Show. Mr T. Watson showed some mammoth pumpkins, and Mr Jabez Johnson’s marrows were very lino. In onions Mr Dorset’s entries weie much noticed, so also was that gentleman's rhubaib, eschalots, and kidney potatoes; the latter were most especially good samples. Mr Seed, the treasurer, and the secretary, Mi Butcher, were very attentive to th-ir Julies, and gave every assistance and information to enquirers ; Mr T. C. Barnaii? acted as doorkeeper ; Messrs A. Booth and Parker cue Jo in attendance, and gave every assistance. The judges in the flower and fiuit departments were Messrs 11. H. Jaoksoi and T. Kempt,m, jun., in the other depar' merits Messrs W. Ever itt and J. Bryant. Th Band played durir,; the evening, and there was a fair attendance of visitors. In the afternoon many attended from Greylown.J
