The returns of Hailway revenue and expenditure for the four weeks ending 13th November show the former to have been L 69,007 lOd, and the latter L 51,067 17s Bd. Of the revenue L 23,148 5s 8d came from the North Island. In the corresponding period last year the revenue was L 71,068 12s 3d, the North Island contributing L 24,638 8s Bd, and the Middle Island L 46,435 3s 7d. Of the expenditure the North Island lines absorbed L 17.902, and the Middle Island L 33.166 17s Bd. In the corresponding period of 1885 the expenditure was L 51,716 6s lOd, the North Island lines taking L 16.942 12s 5d and the Middle Island lines L 34,773 14s sd. The percentage of expenditure to revenue on the several lines for the respective periods of 1886 and 1885 were as follows :—North Island—Kawakawa, 63 19, 84*27 ; Whangarei, 82'24, 86*39 ; Auckland, 85 24, 70-10 ; Napier, 58 50, 61 07 ; Wellington, 76*41, 70 30 : Wanganui, 96‘48, 91.98. Middle Island—Hurunui Bluff, 74*51, 67 4 75 ; Greymouth, 57*69, 55*87 ; Westport, 45*41,54 76; Nelson, 79*38, 77*27 ; Pic ton, 104 47, 99*36. Grand total 75*64,69*42. On the Wellington ; section the revenue for the four weeks was L 5040 16s Id, as against L 4889 Os 7d in the four weeks last year. The number of passengers carried was 27,311, as against 24,870, and the fares amounted to L 2038 2s sd, as against- L 2403 15s Bd.
