One ©f the largest American manufacturing and exporting firms, writing by the last mail to an Auckland firm, gives the following forecast of business “ Business has greatly improved in this country, with the prospect of a very great boom beginning with 1887. It probably will not reach its height until 1889. Everything indicates a commercial prosperity such as we have not known for the last four years. .We have more orders for the spring of 1881 than we ever had in any previous year iu our history at this date.

Messrs Laery and Campbell report produce as follows ; —“ There has been an improvement iu demand, and prices, therefore, are steady. Fruit is scarce, especially apples ; oranges and lemons are fetching premium prices ; a large shipment of pines, peanuts i»nd cocoanuts are advised as having arrived by the Arawata at Auckland, which will reach this about Friday. Green fruit is beginning to come in very freely, especially goosi berries. From all accounts the crop of apples will be very heavy. Wheat, maize and oats remain at last quotations ; barley is scarce at 2s ’ld ; bran and pollard very slow of sale, owing to the quantity of green food to he obtained. Old potatoes, 40s to 45s per ton ; new do, 7s 6d to 8s per cwt ; large quantities of the latter have arrived in the market, hence the fall in price ; onions, 8s to 10s ; bacon, iVo., 64d ; cheese is beginning to come from all parts, and may be quoted from 6d to Old; eggs, lOd; fresh batter, (id to Gjd ; prime salt, 8d ; kegs extra. The Anglo Scandinavian condensed milk is still making strides amongst the trade and public generally.” Melbourne, December 1.

The manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand reports as follows of the local market Wheat is quiet at 4s lOd to 4sl Id ; barley, slow of sale, 3s 9d to 4s 3d. New Zealand oats (feed sorts), show no improvement, 2s 8d to 2s lid. There is no material change in New Zealand oats (milling sorts) ; if anything slightly weaker, 2s 7d to 3s. New Zealand oats (under bond) 2s Id to 2s 2d. WOOL SALES. The first wool sale for the season was held by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Committee at Wellington on Tuesday, and attracted a large attendance of buyers, the bidding being spirited. The catalogue submitted was regarded as a fairly representative one, and the sale altogether, was considered satisfactory, and highly gratifying to the vendors. Greasy merino fetched from 7d to BJd per lb, while greasy cross breds sold at from 6d to 8(d per Jh. At the conclusion of the wool sale a quantity of sheepskins was disposed of, the prices ranging from 4Jd tos£d per lb. The company’s next sale will be held abont the middle of the month. Melbourne, December 2. Messrs K. Goldsbrough and Co, held their usual weekly sale this afternoon, the rooms being crowded with home and foreign buyers. A catalogue of 4800 bales w. re offered, for which there was spirited c.mipj. tition, especially lor all clean wools which were free from burr. Earthy and wasty sorts were dull. Good greasy merino Bold up to lljd, and good greasy crossbred to 19 Jd. Good scoured wool sold up to Is 7id, and superior greasy lambs realised Is 2d. London, November 30. The wool sales opened today before a large attendance of Home and foreign buyers. The catalogue comprised 10,100 bales. For greasy merinos, prices ruled id to Id lower than at the close of last auctions, and for scoured merinos prices were lid to 3d lower. The series will close on the 16 th Dec.
