Masterton Agricultural Show.

The second annual Show of the Masterton Agricultural and Pastoral Association jester, day was a success. It is said that there were about three thousand persons present, and the exhibits in some classes were good, especially in horses, thoroughbred and draught. In thoroughbred horses, Dan O’Conocll took first honors, Crawford’s Priory coming second. There were other very good exhibits in this class, and the Masterton district can be congratulated upon having some really tine horses, which, both as thoroughbreds and heavy draughts, would bo a credit and pride to any part of the colony; In draught horses there were a good few entries, and Laird O’ Largo took first prize ; Mr Harding’s horse Gladstone, a splendid animal, second. The Oamatu horse Avon was highly com. In cattle there were good entries, although in this department the Masterton district cannot vie so favorably with the Lower Valley, but although the exhibits were not so numerous, they were fair samples of the classes they represented. The sheep exhibits were very lair ones and compare very favourably with those shown at the Masterton Show last year. Although the early part of the morning was rather threatening, towards the afternoon, though the air was very cold for the season of the year, the rain did not come down, and the only efiect from the previous showers was to make the Show ground exceedingly muddy. The farming community from all parjs of the Valley was well represented, and the Managing Committee appeared quite equal to their duties. Mr R J Fitton, the secretary, filled his important post in a most able manner. The total number of entries were 501 against 461 last year, the classes being as follows Horses, 161 ; cattle, 70 ; sheep, 162 ; pigs, 14 ; implements and produce, 78; and nearly all were present, including some recent purchases from the Canterbury Show. Many persons who anticipated a show in these classes upon a par with last year were quite taken with surprise at the great improvement. In the produce class, a ham, a facsimile of the flabby one, if not the same, shown at the Carterton bhow, by some unaccountable means secured the first prize, Mr S. Haigh’s exhibit, to all appearances a most superior one, taking second. Mr S. Haigh, of Grey town, also took first and second prizes for bacon. There were other good exhibits, but although tho competition in this class was keen, the judges could not conscientiously have made their awards differently. Other classes of produce were also shewn, and tho implement class was something bolter than we have been accus. toiued to witness in the Wairarapa. The town during the day presented quite a gata appearance, aud the hotel accommodation, although at present on ordinary occasioua quito*umple, was taxed to its utmost. Wo congratulate the other end of the Valley upon their success on this occasion.

Mr J C Vallanoe took a,l the prizes in yearlings in the thoroughbred cß.dso took prize for dry mate, 1 years and upward;; for mare io foal, Mr Tates took first honours Mr Vallanoe for dry, brood mare, and for entire pony, Mr Jaques, with his Admiral. In weight carrying hacks, Mr Seymour Tancred tools first prize with Socrates, Mr Gayfer coming second with Conrad. For pair buggy horses Mr Vallanoe first and Mr Neil second.
