Wairarapa Standard Published Tri-weekly, Price Id. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1886. The Mayoral Election.
Tbb burgesses of Greytown do not, as a rale, trouble themselves about municipal mailers, and we doubt if much interest will be taken in the election for Mayor which is close at hand. Mr F. H. Wood, who has filled the mayoral chair for some years with considerable credit to himself and the Borough, does not intend to offer himself for reflection, and the burgesses most therefore look round for suitable persons to contest the seat. We speak in the plural because we believe saob offices should be contested where there are good men to choose from, We have heard the names of Dr Smith and Mr H. Udy, sen., mentioned as likely candidates, and we hope those gentlemen will allow themselves to be nominated on Wednesday next. Daring the period that Mr Wood has held office the electors have been thoroughly satisfied with his administration and that of the Councillors who were put into office with him. Though the Borough is not free from debt the principal streets and footpaths are in good condition, and the works taken in hand have been carried oat with every regard to economy. Our town is not a very busy one, but the Council have looked well after it, and the general opinion of visitors is complimentary for its clean and neat appearance. The Council having done its duty in the past, we can hope for continued care, but a great deal rests with the Mayor, and therefore we hope tbs electors will take some little interest in the coming election, and see that the civic chair is filled by an energetic and competent man.
