VICTOBIAN RACING CLUB SPRING MEETING. THE MELBOURNE CUP. Uelboubre, November 2. The second day's racing of the Victorian Racing Clnb took place at Flemington to day. It ia aatimated that the attendance was larger than hut year, and that folly 135,000 were preaent. The lawn was packed, and presented a more brilliant spectacle than ever. The (tends were overcrowded His Excellency the Governor and suite, and the Governors of South Australia, and New South Wales and Tasmania were also prevent. The win of Arsenal in the Cup, although he had been well supported by the public and the stable, was a good one for the bookmakers. The winner was previously owned by the Hon W Pearson, but last year he was purchased by Mr W Gannon, of Sydney. Trenton and Bilvermine, which ran second and third respectively, ran well throughout. Melbourne Cap Handicap, of 20 sovs each ; 10 ft or 5 sovs only if declared before 2nd August, with 2000 sovs added; second horse 500 sovs, and third 300 sovs out of stakes ; 2 miles. Mr W Gannon's b b Arsenal, by Golds* borough—Powder, lyrs, 7st4lb .. 1 Mr W C Cooper’s b hj Trenton, by Musket—Frailty, Syrs. 9st 51b .. .. 2 Mr M J Sadder’a bl hj Silvermine, by Napoleon—Silvethair, Syrs, 7st 101b .. 3 As the horses approached the straight Trident was taken to the front, followed by Bilvermine, Hexham, Myall, King. Crossfire, and Ben Bolt- At the mile post, Artenal, whose colors had been prominent throughout the race, now improved his position. When fairly in the straight Hexham fell away beaten, and left Arsenal, Trident and Silvermine at the head of affairs. The last named at the half distance looked like the winner, but Arsenal made a grand struggle and secured the lead, being landed a winner by a length from Trenton, who came with a great rush at the finish; Trident was fourth. Then followed Sheet Anchor, Myall King, and Crossfire. Grace Darling and Malna were the two last. Time, 3min 31see. Bail way Stakes—Pocahontas 1, Alban ns 2, Toronto 3.
