A Working Man’s Opinion

To the Editor of the Standard. Sir,- 1 read the complaint of " A Shearer ” in Friday's Standard, and while 1, as a working man, am glad to see that you allow us to make our voice beard through the Press, I am sorry that " Shearer ” did not write a little more calmly. He was right in protesting against any reduction of chargee for shearing if he thought the rise in wool justi6ed it, bat I doubt his wisdom io talking in the way be did about our M.H.U.’*, simply because they are runholders. Tell some men that So-and-so is a rnnbolder, and it has the same effect as showing a red rag to an excited boll. I don’t like this spirit, and " Shearer ” baa done his cause no good. He epoke of what had been dons on the banks of the Waiohine river for the member of Wairarape South, and I (eel rare thet " Shearer ” does not know anything about the work, the expenses connected with it, and how it is to bo met, or he wonld have held hie tongue. When a man writee unfairly on one point he is jut as likely to do so on others, and therefore bis opinion can have little weight. 1 was glad to see that “ Vox Popnli" had apoken out so strongly upon the way oar railway is managed, and I hope bis remarks will stir up the public mind. Until we get some reform in the passenger rates we must not rest satisfied. It is not merely a local cry, bat one that has been raised from one end of the colony to the other. The voice of the people will yet be heard, and now that an election ia close at hand we most make our influence felt. I am, Ac., Working Man.
