Census Statistics.

Some further results of the Census of March last were published the other day in the Government Gazette, from which we extract a few interesting figures : —Table 1 shows the extent of occupied holdings (over one acre), land fenced, and number of live stock and poultry m each provincial district. There are in the colony 27,848,690 acres in such holdings, as against 26,845,466 in 1881, of which 11,728,236 acres are freehold, and 16,253,797 fenced in. Live stock of all descriptions number 17,893,763, as against 16,193,574 at the 1881 censusHorses have increased by 26,000, cattle by 155.000, breeding oews by 53,000, sheep by 4.000. and breeding ewes bj 1,500,000. Table IV gives the same information respecting the counties. Wairarapa West County has 645 occupied holdings, of which 161 are from 1 to 10 acres. 159 from 10 to 50. 77 from 50 to 100, 87 from 100 to 200, 32 from 200 to 320, 41 from 320 to 640,17 from 640 to 1000, 44 from 1000 to 5000, 10 from 5000 to 10,000,14 from 10,000 to 20,000 2 from 20,000 to 50,000, and 1 from 50,000 to 100,000 acres, inclusive. Wairarapa East has 652 occupied holdings, 158 from 1 acre to 10 acres, 118 from 10 to 50, 93 from 50 to 100, 82 from 100 to 200, 56 from 300 to 320, 41 from 320 to 640, 29 from 640 to 1000, 54 from 1000 to 5000, 7 from 5000 to 10,000, 9 from 10,000 to 20,000, 3 from 20,000 to 50.000, and 2 from 50,000 to 100,000 inclusive. In the whole colony there are four estates of more than 100,000 acres, and twenty six between 50,000 and 100,000 acres. Table V Classifies the acreage of holdings, and shows that there are 39,561 holdings of 1000 acres each.

Table VI gives the annual production of butter and cheese, from which we gather that Auckland with 2775,5311bs of butter stands first, Otago 2,580,7251b5, and Canterbury 2,298,3831b5, Wellington 1,813,0021b5, and Taranaki 1,441,7361bs coming next. In cheese Canterbury leads the way with 1,950,8381b5, Otago being second with 1,034,5931b5, Auckland next with 781,109, and Wellington fourth—4ll,3B4. The total butter, as given in the 1886 census, is 12,170,9641b5, as against 8,453,8151bs lor 1881; iu cheese the figures were 4,594,795, and 3,178,694 respectively. The quantity of wheat on hand was 2,752,683 bushels, as against 4,930,138 for the same period in 1881 ; oats are 4,664,689 bushels, as against 5,336,315 ; barley, 540,000 bushels, as against 1,030,010 ; and flour 6340 as against 4965 tons.

Table VII shows the annual production of butter and cheese, and the number of agricultural machines in counties. Wairarapa Wbst shows 595,9731bs butter and 12,9001b8 cheese ; Wairarapa East, 125,2641bs butter, and 3,1561bs cheese. Wairarapa West pos nesses three steam and 16 burse threshing machines, 53 reaping machines, 3 steam ploughs and 2 steam harrows. Wairarapa East possesses 6 steam and 2 horse threshing machines, 46 reaping machines ; there is no mention of steam ploughs or steam harrows.
