The Hon John Bathgate, M.L.C., died at Dunedin on Tuesday afternoon. At Canterbury the Plumpton Handicap waa won by Kingask, Marion 2, and Patrician 3. The Two year old Flutter by Northcote. Mr Justice Higinbotham has been appointed to succeed Sir W. F. Stawell as Chief Justice of Victoria. The football match, Auckland v New South Wales, was won by Auckland by fourteen points to four. The Sydney football team will stay in Auckland until next Tuesday, and on Saturday wtll play another match with the Auckland representatives. The Great Metropolitan Stakes (N.S.W ), waa won by Bohemian : the Jewel, 2 ; Lord William, 3. Woo by a head. Nineteen hones started. Hermanby and Aiministrator are to be •ent to Napier at once to represent the stable at the races tber e. Mr Taaered has not yet received any information concerning the death of hia mare Gossip at Christchurch. He has been notified, however, that a veterinary aorgeon's certificate will be sent to him in due coarse. The mare waa very poor at the time of her death.—Times.
