Orchestral Society.
Last night an orchestral Society was home I in Greytown, and julging by the way m which those assembled took the matter up there is a prosperous and useful career befoie u. Mr M. Varnham, the mon ig spirit in id instrumental music matters in Greytown, '»« called to the chair. The follo.vin/ officers ■vere elected :—President, Mr W C Buchanan, M.H.R ; Vice Presidents, Mc-srs W C Call aud F II Wood ; Committee, Messrs Rirnard, Maguire, Tale, Varnham and Nicol ; secre tary and treasurer, Mr Tate ; conductor, Mr Varnham. It was resolved that honorary members be admitted, the terms of subscription to be 5s per annum, the subscription when paid to entitle the ticket bolder to free admission to the first concert. Arrangements were entered into to get music suitable for brass and stringed instruments from England. Mr Maxton’s oiler to provide a room for practice was accepted. The general meeting over, the committee met to frame rales for the Society’s guidance. It is earnestly hoped that ladies and gentlemen who are anxious to make themselves proficient in instrumental music will commnnioate with the members of tbe committee, and, if possible, join the Society. It is the intention to commence with easy music, and work up by degrees to tbe highest claea, so enabling those not conversant with the more difficult pieces et first to reach it step by step, Under the conductorship of Mr Varnham, a thorough enthusiast in music, and who spare* no rouble to attain proficiency, we prognosticate that before long a concert will be given that will surprise even those who at present have little opinion of tbeir abilities with the insremeuts they handle. We hope a large numlxr of honorary members will be enrolled, whoee subscriptions will enable the Society to purchase music and clear off the preliminary expenses.
