GREYTOWN v. MATARAWA. A match took place on Saturday on the Greytown Reserve between a team from Greytown and one from Matarawa, There were several of the first team
players on both sides as some of those who take part in tho principal matches live in both districts. Last year the Matarawa lads showed some good form in cricket matches, and about a fortnight or three weeks ago they met to practise football. That they “ fancied themselves " was evident by their challenge sent to the Greytown Club, “ Pluck does it ” appears to bo their motto, and the contest on Saturday proved that they were no mean opponents, notwithstanding that some of the players were somewhat “green." The Greytown team also possessed some young aspirants to football fame, so that when both teams took the field there was not much to choose between them. The game was well contested, and during the first spell neither side scored. In tho second division of time, however, the Greytown team obtained three tries. The first was obtained by young Maguire passing smartly to Tooker, and Tocker passing on to Alf Beard, who fell with it, then Roydhouse £(.it tho ball and touched down. The goal was tried for by F. Jackson, but missed. The second try was obtained by Alick Wakelin dribbling the ball beyond the Matarawa goal line, and A. Udy, who w : ,> following up well, secured tho try. The third try was wira by Tucker passing to A. Beard, who touched down behind tiio goal. E. Uily, tho captain of tho Matnrawaius, was a veritable “ Jumbo ” to his side, his punting being first class. Maguire, sen , captained the first team, and did pood service. Tooker played in earnest, gud the smart way in which he picked up ll)(l p, all ou several *'*'j, long wag the admiration of the bystanders. Gallon (Matarawa) also showed some good play, his passing to E, tidy being much noticed ; indeed, several players 011 both sides distinguished themselves. The most noticeable feature was the passing on several occasions, and we believe that If this were practised more our players would gain considerably in their matches, and give tho players an opportunity of showing their skill The match was not without several exciting scrimmages and dribbliogs, and was fought out with good feeling. Mr Webster umpired for Matarawa and Mr J. Terry for Greytown ;Mr W. Knell acted as timekeeper and referee.
