Volunteering.
We have been favoured with a glance at the draft programme prepared for the New Zealand Rifle Association meeting at Christchurch, and believing that it will interest competitors to know what the contemplated changes are, we mention the most important. In all matches the word " medium'’ has been placed before Snider rifles, and “ artillery or cavalry” before carbines, while the words ” Government issue" are substituted for ‘'Government pattern," thus at once fixing the arm to be used by each competitor. The following matches are unaltered, Wellington, £7O Hawke's Bay, £SO ; Auckland, £7O ; Marlborough, £SO ; Nelson. £45 ; West Coast, ; Otago, £jo. The Wanganui Match, £SO, takes place of the Canterbury Match, and the New Plymouth Match, /50, (standing at 200 and kneeling at 300 yards) will count for both belts. In firing off the aggregates for the bolts the ammunition will this year be found by the Association, the other conditions remaining as before. £l5O will be set aside for team matches, and the Council have been asked to express an opinion as to whether it should be divided as formerly between the rifles and carbines. An extra match suggested is one in which any rifle can be used, the stages being Coo, 700, and 800 yards, 20s each. In the special notices to competitors there is little alteration, and there is only one important alteration in the instructions to register keepers, by which provision is made, in the event ot a rifle failing to stand the trigger test, the decision of the officer in command shall be final. In the General Regulations it is provided that the word ''coach” as applied to the team match shall not include plumbing a competitor’s rifle by looking over hj is shoulder. Sighting ammunition will be issued as required, but competitors are not allowed to take away any not fired. In standing shooting no objection will be made to the elbow resting against the body, provided the whole of the left hand is in front of the trigger guard, but the regulation position must be preserved in all other respects. In kneeling the buttock must rest fairly on the heel, no sitting sideways on the leg being allowed.
