Falling off in the Railway Revenue.
It ia to be regrettdd that the return of railway revenue for the first sixteen weeks of the present financial year shows a serious falling off. Notwithstanding that ther. are 105 more miles of railway open now than last year, ‘hegross receipts onlj amounted to 1.011,1-13 ■ ' j sixteen weeks, as against L 330.001, for the corresponding’period of last year, a falling off of nearly L 19.000. while the working expenses amounted to L 225.413, as against L'i15,025, an increase of nearly LIG,oOO, obsotbing 72 per ■ of the revenue as against 65 per ce year, the net profits are i. »s by .early Jj2t),ooo. equal to a decrease of LIOO.OOO a year. The passenger traffic shows little change, there being a trifling increase of 508 passeugers for the period. The live stock traffic exhibited an increase of 41,1)20 head, but the goods traffic displays a decrease of no less than 37,958 tons. The falling off is in the classes firewood, timber, grain and merchandise. The four weekly returns for the period ending ■luly 21, shows a total revenue oILOS.oOI, against L 70.408 lor the corrtuponding period of last year. The North Island returns are 1i22, 670, against L 22,742 ia 1885 ; and the South Island, L 45.821, against L47,C65. The Wellington section returns are satisfaoton ey show LSIOO, against L 4397 for to*torn weeks in the previous year.
