Good News from Kimberley.
hor Borne time past the reports from the Kimberley goldfield have been very conflicting. Tbe latest intelligence is, however of an encouraging .character. The Government Resident at Derby reports, under date July 26, that all at Kimberley are getting gold, and experienced miners consider the prospects favorable. Much gold ia understood to be in diggers’ hands. We wore talking the other day to a well known Wellington merchant of many years’ colonial experience as to the probable effect of the Kimberley gold field discoveries upon this colony, and he said this Kimberley is going to turnup trumps, and New Zealand will benefit thereby. Should a big rush set in for Kimberley and the goldfield become a great fact, a number of people will leave New Zealand who could not obtain employ meat ia it, and there will be more room and a shelter chance for those who stay in the colony. Then a big gold field at Kimberley would open up a new market for New Zealand produce, in tbe shape o' frozen meat, tinned meats, wheat, cheese, butter, and other productions. Our articles iu those lines are better than what can be produced iu Australia, and we would occupy the premier position iu any new market opened up at Kimberley. Then an extensive gold field at Kimberley would attract a large population, not only from the other colonies, but also from Great Britain to the new El Dorado. When men had made money at Kimberley they would not care to stay there permanently, owing to the bad climate, but would seek homes iu other parts of the colonies. Quite a number of people with money would thus ultimately come to New Zealand and settle down. Besides, of those who left New Zealand for Kimberley, a good few who make money will return to the colony to invest their savings and form a permanent Lome. Altogether, 1 think that an extensive gold field at Kimberley will, iu the long run, be productive of much benefit to New Zealand.” Thus spake our merchant friend, who has been twenty five years in business in Wellington ami lias travelled iu other countries besides, ami wo give Ins words as being worthy of attention and consideration.
