The Volunteers.

To the Editor of the Standard,

Sib,—l was much gratified at the pernsal of" Veteran’s ” letter in a late issue of your paper. 1 think " Veteran ’’ has struck at the root of the whole question, and many that are now speaking lightly of the meritorious endeavors of those who are at present connected with our local corps, will befors very long be only too anxious to join the ranks. I have heard men in this district, sir, say “Oh ! volunteering is no good ; this thing is no good ; and that thing, is of not much account. If so and so was not connected with the movement I would join.” Now, I have carefully studied the career of snob individuals and find that they never agree with anything long at a time, and no matter who may be either at the head or the tail of matters with which they have to deal, they always most religiously " agree to differ they have not the stability of mind to be long in connection with anything, and like the " Dog in the Manger " they neither will lend a helping hand themselves nor credit anyone else with any good motives. 1 have heard that some of these 11 busy bodies ” or rather “ idle bodies ” would like to dictate to tbe volunteers as to bow they would do certain business, if left in their hands. The Volunteers will no doubt by past experience be fully aware of the value of their advioe and will think and act for themselves. I am, &0., Old Soldikb.
