Protection.

The Hon Mr Chamberlain recently moved in the Legislative Council 11 That it is of the utmost importance to the permanent prosperity of the colony of Now Zealand that every encouragement should be given to manufacturing industries by the imposition of protective duties.” There was a rather interesting debate on the subject, bnt the resolution was very properly rejected. It is certainly advisable to encourage the development of local manufactures and industries, bnt it is not necessary to adopt a policy of Protection to secure that object. The existing Customs Duties already afford a fair measure of protection to local manufacturers, and those suited to the colony are doing very well as it is. The colony basno need of any further measure of Protection.
