London, June 29. It is affirmed in Pane that another batch of recidivistvg will be sent to New Caledonia in the autumn. The Prince of Wales has laid the foundation stone of a peoples’ palace. A despatch has been received from Mr E. L. Layard, British Consul at Now Caledonia, in which he declares that it is the intention of the French authorities to eject settlers from that island in order to reacquire their land for the settlement ol convicts. The cricket match at Chichester, Australians versus Lord Malch’s eleven, was resumed and concluded to-day. The first innings of the visitors closed for 173, Garrett being the largest contributor with 49 (caught). The home team iu their second innings made a poor stand against the bowling of Giffen and only succeeded in putting together 63 runs The Australians bad thus only 31 runs to win, and these they obtained with the loss of but two wickets, and won the match with eight wickets to spare. In the first innings of the Englishmen Spofforth took 6 wickets for 70 runs, and in the second innings Giffen too 7 for 20, his bowling being splendid. Sydney, June 30. In the Legislative Assembly last night a resolution was passed affirming the proposal for a gratuity to Sir John Robertson, for his distinguished patriotic service. Adelaide, June 30. The Colonial Treasurer made a financial statement in the Legislative Assembly last night. The revenue for the past year amounted to £2,240,000, and to £3,390,000. The revenue was £386,000 below the estimate. Customs decreased by £145,000, and railway receipts by £BI,OOO. The total pnbliodebt amounts to £18,400,000, The revenne for the current financial year is estimated at £2,110,000, and the expenditure ot £2,200,000. The total deficiency estimated is £853,000, which is to be covered by fresh taxation amounting to £109,000,! including stamp taxes, expected to realise £65,000, and by a considerable reduction in the Civil Service. Melbourne, July 1.
The Victorian revenue returns for the past year show the receipts to have amounted to £6,410,000, being an increase of £126,000, compared with the previous twelve months. Customs income increased by £85,000, and that from railways by £106,000, Excise revenue decreased by £24,000, and territorial by £103,000. The total revenue of last quarter was £1,640,000, or an increase of £67,000, compared with the June quarter ol 1885.
