THE RUMOURED OUTBREAK AT TONGARIRO.
Auckland, Tuesday. A special from Taupo, received at 4 o’clock 3’ealerduy, states that loud explosions have Been heard in the direction of Tongariro, followed by a muffled rumbling noise. The waters of Lake Taupo were greatly agitated, ard rose considerably, rushing up the beaches in tremendous surf, aud pouring through the outlet at the bead of the Waikato hirer in a deafening roar. Tougariio was bidden by clouds yesterday, but showed signs of unusual activity, emitting large aud inter* mitteut volumes of steam. Karakatiti and Ngawhao on the shore adjacent are unusually active. There are greater volumes of steam on the shores of Lake Taupo now than known at any time preceding the eruption. Tonga* riro is roaring angrily, and at intervals loud thundering reports like cannonading frigbtened the shepherds st the fool of the moan* tain, who waited terror-stricken fur daylight, and escaped to Tokano.
