The Midland Railway.

There was a debate in the If on so the other night on a motion brought forward by Mr G. F, Richardson, asking for n return of the land:- proposed to be set apart for the Midland Railway. During the debitte quite a variety of opinions were expressed. Some hou members seemed to think that there was not enough of land along the proposed railway line to satisfy the demands of the company. Sir George Grey denounced the whole scheme as a nefarious one which would rob the great body of the [People of their heritage. Then it turned out that the Company in England had issued a prospectus declaring that they were goiu« to acquire an estate of the most magnificent laud in the.world. On this point Mr Scobie Mackenzie said “ that hou members might not be aware that there was in the colony a copy of the prospectus issued by the Company. He had seen it; and he could say that he was astounded at the plausibility of it; in fact he felt almost disl>osed to take up shares himself, although he well knew the nature of the country —the prospectus was so tempting. He believed the time would come when the East and West Coast Railway would be iwinted out as the concern which brought so much disaster to the people of England in the year ISSO.” We fancy that when the shareholders of the Company find out what sort of laud their estate consists of they will be rather disapjiointed. Mr W, C. Buchanan, who knows the country, some time ago declared “ that it is neither fit for settlement nor for anything else.” However, thio is the lookout of “ the great Midland Railway Company and their shareholders.
