The Wairarapa Volunteer Review at Greytown.

The Volunteer Review at Greytown on Monday waa as successful as was expected. The various companies from the other towns arrived by train early in the morning. The Maaterton corps, under Captain D. Donald and Lieut Thompson, headed by their excellent band made a fine miliiary appears me, and were a credit and honor to their town. The Carterton Company, under Captain T - Bennett, with Lients Crawford and Moore, were a really good company and Carterton baa every reason to be proud of them. The new Featheraton Company also, under Captain A. Donald, with Lients Benton and Bmith, presented a very soldierly appearance, and for a new company were particularly •Xpert in their drill, indeed, the volunteer company of Featheraton ia one of the institutions of the town and district that should be encouraged to the utmost, and it is very nbeibing to see so many of the young men spending a portion 'of their time in aneb a beneficial pursuit, for every young man who has been drilled has most unquestionably a better deportment and carriage than an awkward non militant. The handsome new helmets of these eompaniee named are a great acquisition. The Papawai Native Corps have not jet the uniforms, but the Company, under Captain C. Jury, on Monday looked a fine robust body of men, and the New Zealand Government will no doubt be much satisfied that they have taken a new departure and aeeepted the services of such an acquisition | to the ranks of the citizen soldiers of the | •olony. The Native Corps will get their j uniforms in about three weeks. | Tbs borne company, the time honored Gravtown corps, under Lieuts Cameron and Porritt, were, to s certain extent, rather at a disadvantage as regarad their appearance, as they had been disappointed in not receiving their helmets in time, but they mustered wcil and did their work in a manner worthy of their prestige, although several of their veterans vere unavoidably absent. Win n this eompsny get their new full drsss uniforms they will take some rubbing out. The bstallion proceeded to the Reciertion Reserve, headed by the Masterton Volunteer I Band, and the stirring marches pUyed hy ! the Masterton musicians quite enlivened the Borough. Soon after marching on to the ground, the battalion formed into H na tu( j soon the order was given to present arms, the leu de joie wag fired, and fired very fairly, especially by the rear rank. Thine cheers called for by Cxptiin Donald for tlm Queen were given heartily by the Volunteers, and re-echoed by many of the spectators, about 300 of whom were looking on, and the Band playing God Save the Queen ’ then the companies march past under a review of Captain D. Donald as acting Mijor for Major Bunty, who i« absent in th-.- other Lland. The marching put the saluting point was as good as might have been expected from a bod; of oica who do not frequently practice ; but often infellig.-oce Supplies to an extent the place of custom, go in this part of che programruo (the maiehi-ig pust) the men acted credit - ly. After some the menuispersed for lum-h, and it ia a pity the arrangements for tha reception of the men were not more complete. It was stipge.it-nl by some members of the Greytown Company that a spread should be laid in the Town Hail so that all the Volunteers should have been seated together and not have to fork out for their rations at the time of getting supplied, and it is a pity that .the idea waa not carried out, as the men bad to distribute all over the town and fossick for rstioos, whereas Mr Jones or some other person eonld have given them a good plain dinner comfortably and Simultaneously, if the matter had ooly been attended to bye seme responsible person. Mr Jones mad every preparation and had a large quantity of food left on his hands. But the laek of management made all the trouble. It is hagsd it will never occur again in Greytown. Alter the adjournment, judging distance and skimiahin* drill were engaged in, and the ether merman ts on the programme were •erried oni. Then the battalion marched to the railway station to the strains of the hand, and alter patting oordislly with the foeal eorpe proceeded to return in their several directions homewards.
