Wairarapa Standard Published Tri-weekly, Price Id. WEDNESDAY, MAY 19, 1886. Mr Bryce at Wellington.

Mr Bryce received the intended ovation when be arrived at Wellington. The Mayor made a speech and presented him with an address, and Mr Bryce responded in a few quiet, modest and hearty words which did him much credit. Mr Bryce has gone to Wanganui wherd he will be entertained at a banquet and made much of. On his return to Wellington another banquet will be given in his honor, aud after that he will attend to his Parliamentary duties. At the present moment Mr Bryce is the most popular man in the colony, and there is talk in some quarters of getting him to become Leader of the Opposition in Parliament. We scarcely think that anything will come of this suggestion. Mr Bryce has always held a good position in Parliament, but it may well be doubted that he possesses the qualities which would make him a good leader of a political party. Mr Bryce has been a most able Native Minister, a position for which he possessed special fitness, but it does not therefore follow that he possesses' the tact, conciliatory power, aud general capacity to lead which would qualify him to be the fitting Chief of a powerful Political Party. But Mr Bryce is specially a modest and retiring man, so that we do not suppose that the idea of leading the Opposition iu Parliament has ever entered into his mind. Mr Bryce has never sought distinction, and whatever positions he has held have been pressed upon him through the force of circumstances and the exigencies of political events.
