Great Fire in Canterbury
Wuiun, April 6. A destructive fire occurred here last night by which a considerable amount of property was destroyed, estimated at £‘lo,ooo. It started in the Club Hotel, a large wooden building, which was destroyed in a short space of time. The Wesleyan Church on the other side of the road theu caught, with the adjoining school-houses, Cameron Bros.’ general store, a large stable and granary full of grain ; and then the dwelling houses of Cameron Bros, and of Mr O’Sullivan were also destroyed. At this time three other houses and a stable were on fire, but were saved with difficulty. Cameron Bros, lose heavily. The insurances on Potter’s Hotel and stock amonnt to £3OOO, divided between the Union, South British, New Zealand, and the Australian Mercantile. Cameron's store is insured for the dwilling for £3OO, and the stables and grauuiy for £4OOO, divided bc'.weea the South liiitnli, ' ulouial, and Nation--). The WVah-yan Cnnrcli and school are covered by liouo iu tno Union and Lancashiic. The other insurances are unknown.
