Special Settlement Association.

Applications from the Carterton and General Gordon Special Settlement Associations for the unallotted portion of *tlie Mangatainoko Block, Wairarapa, were considered by the Land Board yesterday morning. Mr Howarth. solicitor, appeared in support of the application by the General Gordon Association. Mr M'Cardle (says the Post) in moving that both applications should not be granted, said he sympathised with the special settlement movement, but in the cases under notice be felt it would not be right to allow either association to take possession of the unsold portion of the Mangatainoko Block, because it bad gone forth that the land was to be sold in the ordinary way, and that it would be unfair to sell it in any other manner. If th» land were given to either association the public would be unable to compete for it, and under the circumstances this would not be fair. He did not think that the refusal to allow either association to take up the land need prevent thpm from settling, because there was plenty of good land available on the eastern side of the Puketoi Range. He suggested that the Board should ask Government to open up a portion of the Puketoi Block for special settlement purposes. Mr W. A. Fitzbeibert remarked that early last year the Halt Special Settlement Association applied for the very same piece of land the Carterton and General Gordon Associations were now desirous of acquiring. At the suggestion of Mr Bonny, who was in the chair, it waa decided to take no action until next meeting.
