Pedestrianism.
The running matches arranged between K. Uayne and H. Hodge fotmi mile, and between Clem Udy andf. Hawkins f0r220 yards, drew a good sprinkling of spectators to the Greytown Reserve on Saturday afternoon. The mile race was for £5, Hodge receiving 35 yards start ; the 220 yards race was for £lO, both men starting from scratch. Considerable interest was evinced in the events, and several bets were made upon them. Messrs Baillie and Skeet acted as judges and Mr Loasby as starter. The 220 yards race was the tirat event run off The men had got to the scratch when the pistol went off prematurely just as the starter was watching for both men to bo on the «jni vive. Hawkins had made a hound forward just us the pistol went off and was fuiX live yards ahead before Udy got away. Udy robed upon hie opponent a little, hu*. it was impossible to overtake him amt Hawkins won liy about live yards. Time 251 sees. The race was no discredit to Udy. 1 i.e m:le lore mused some excitement. A good .-tint was dhole.land Hodge maintained the lead mud the hod lap, when Bayne i hu to the lioot and raim' home an easy winner. Tune Imin 5t»J sees.
