Wellington Cattle Board.
I A meeting of the Wei ington Cattle Board i was hel l on Wednesday afternoon. Pres ent-Mr fi. Bunny (Chairman), and Mr James Tav'.r. The fol owing reports received by Mr Bunny on the reported case of tuberculosis iu the Waimrapa were read From Edward Orbed, Sheep, Cattle and Rabbit Inspec'or. Mas'ertnn, to Henry Bunny Esq , Chairman Wellington Cattle Board Sir.—l am instructed by the Co'onial Secretary to confer with you as Chairman of the above Board regarding an imported bull, the property of Mr Duncan McMaster, of Matawhero. Lower Valley. I have the honor to report that on Friday, the 12th instant, I visited Mr D M'Master's estate, and made an inspection of an imported bull which was landed in Wellington about the list August iSdj. having been purchased from Mr Samuel Gardiner, of Vic ona. The bull was suffering from an enlargement of the* throat, a noise in breathing, weakness in walk mg, and dry skin. The swelling is in the parotid glands, on the side of the throat, beneath the ear. Pressure on the windpipe in the region of the throat, gives pain. A discharge from the nose sometimes takes place, which is ejected by coughing The complaint at this stage is difficult for me :o form a correct diagnosis, not being a professional man. The symptoms are those of a maligant sore throat, and also are symptoms of (liberations in its first stage. Tuberculosis is known by the noise in breathing and enlargement of throat. As a general rue, no alarming symptoms are visible until the disease has advanced into the second stage, when a correct diagnosis can be
given. The bull is a valuable one. having cost Mr M'Master A common beast would 1 0 hilled at little expense, and best understood by reference to post mortem appliances, and the mi'idv at once ascertained. I have requested Mr M’Master to remove the bull from his herd. I consider the opinion of a scientific veterinarian should be obtained to certify the disease from the outset. I could meet the person you may choose to send at any place to be mentioned, and proceed with him to Mr. M Master's homestead. The symptoms of the second stage of tuberculosis do not appear to be visible in the bull, but symptoms of a malignant sore throat are visible, and in unfavourable cases malignant sore throat is known to terminate in bronchitis, sporadic plenro pneumonia, Ac. I have, &c. t Edward Orbell. Wellington, 21st March, 1886 Sib,—ln accordance with your instructions of the 17th inst., I proceeded to Masterton next day (t8) in company with Mr. Inspector Orbell, and thence to the station of D. M'Master, Esq. Malawhero, Lower Valley. I have the honour to report that on my arrival there an imported bull (red) was brought from the paddock for my in spection. I found on examination that the animal was in lair condition, but suffering fron chionic laryngitis, apparently of long standing. The disease appears at present to be confined to the upper air passages. I could not delect disease in the lower air passages or lungs. Thedtseasedoes not appear to be of a tubercular diathesis. 1 see by the aide and scientific report of Mr Orbell that the bull was much worse on the 12th inst. That I can account for from the nature of his employment that day as learned from his owner. Any exciting cause or change in atmosphere will greatly aggravate the symptoms The disease appears to be slowly out progressively moving on, and what the ultimate result will be, time only will tell. At present, from the nature and situation of the disease, it is, in my opinion, non-con-tagious and non-infectious. In conclusion, 1 wish to state that Mr M'Master afforded me every facility for the purpose of my examination, and supplied me with all information and assistance. I have, &c., T. Michie, M.R.C.V.S., Lond,, Veterinary Surgeon. U. Bunny, Esq., Chairman Wellington Cattle Board The Board, after considering the reports, decided to take no action in the matter.
