Featherston Road Board.
To the Editor of the Standard, Sia, —1 cannot allow tbe letter io vour last issue signed “ Ratepayer ” go unchallenged, aa it may mislead a number of tbe Pabau residents. Ha eulogises the action of the wardens for Otaraia ami Awbea for offering their rates to tbe country. Tbe writer can know bat very little about the roads in these two particular wards. Last winter the Otaraia Ward was in a deplorable state for want of lands and lbs present warden has already anticipated a portion of next year’s rates to pot it in order. I need hardly mention tbe Awbea Ward, aa nearly every one knows in this district that tbe preseut rate is only just able to keep the roed in a decent state of repair. My opinion is tbe two Wardens re tarred to were only joking. “ Ratepayer " does not reabzs tbs fact that Wardens are sleeted to look after the interests of tbe sabdivision they are elected for, and not to spend their rates in another part of tbs district. If tbe county eonld give tbe Road Board snv guarantee that tbe money would be repaid io a certain time, 1 am tore tbe whole Board would be only too willing to lend tbe money, but they would not be doing their dntv to Ibetr respective wards ii they lent tbe money on any other terms. lam, Ae., Wm B. Bid will.
