Strange Occurrence at Sea.

When the Steamship Maniponri left Auckland on Thursday afternoon, the hatchea were removed to get a parcel, when smoke issued in large volumes, and it was found to come from a small package of nitrio or sulphuric acid. Mr Uorris, the chief officer snd aome others went below to get the package. They succeeded with difficulty, the men becoming insensible and foaming at the mouth through breathing the poisoned air. On arming at Qithorne the men were sent to the hospital, bnt the chief officer and third mate have died ; the others are recovering.
