Instructions to the Police.

The following district order has been issued by the Inspector to the .police stationed in the Wairarapa districts : 1. Complaint haring been recently made by owners of stock, of losses sustained by them, the police in the several sab-districts are enjoined to pay tbeir utmost attention to tbs subject with e view of detecting offenders, end bringing them to justice. 2. To enable the police to accomplish the above object it is most desirable they should at once make themselves thoroughly acquainted with the brands used on the stations to enable th- tu to have means of ready reference- A book containing the desired information will be provided for the members of the foifee, who may have charge of the snbdistricU. and it will be their duty to see that all brands are entered, as necessity may arise. 3. When stock are known to have been purchased in aoy sub-district, and it is toe intention of the owner to pass through any other sob-dizUicts, the member of the force in charge of former, should communicate with the latter, and avoid the necessity for inquiry 6. In addition to the above precautions it mast be considered indispensible on the part of the police to have the slaughter houses in their respective districts under a strict supervision. They must also attend public sa.es of stock, and do all in their power to prevent and detect crime, and show that they have a thorough knowledge of the brands of the several stock holders.

7. Drivers and others in charge of travelling stock should at all times, be closely watched, more especially when they are nearing then destination, as it is then incumbent upon them to dispose of the surplus stock they may have absorbed on the road.
