Bush fires in Victoria.
Details of the disaster caused by the tries in the Heytesbury forest (Victoria) continue to come to hand, which show that the damage and suffering is even greater than has been supposed. A large number of the 'arnilies who were burnt on: are .still without shelter, and. are sleeping in miatnias. constructed of sheets of batk and branches, which firm their only protection against the weather. The blackened landscape presents a doliful spectacle, and the charred trees emit a disagreeable odour, which is heightened by the decaying bodies of kangaroos and other animals which fell victims to the flames. It is expected that some of the hurut-out selectors will be compelled to relinquish their holdings. One man who went into the forest some years ago with £BOO is now penniless, and lias decided to seek fresh fields. Mr Ham, the Wesleyan Home missionary, residing in the forest, had to ride for his life for a distance of three miles in front of the rapidly advancing flames; and many other hairbreadth escapes are recorded.
