“Neglecting to Provide.”

Mr Wardbll, the Resident Magistrate at Wellington, has given a man named Foden the alternative of finding two sureties of £25 each . that he would provide for his wife and children, or being sent to gaol for three months, with bard labor. This decision was an absolutely just one, although the punishment was exceptional in amount But selfish, heartless, and neglectful husbands ought to be severely dealt with. Unfortunately, in the majority of these cases the husband makes off to some other place, leaving his wife and children destitute, and thus often cannot be got hold of. But this man Foden remained in Wellington, so he was brought to book and subjected to exemplary punishment. Only by severe measures can the heartless offence by a husband of refusing to provide for his wife and family, be properly dealt with.
