Mr Joseph Saunders’ original contract for a portion of the Te Ato reclamation at Wellington is now almost completed. The Post says what has been done has, in a sanitary point of view, proved so valuable that the desirability of extending the reclamation round the remainder of the foreshore is selfevident. The only obstacle is the question of funds, and we ate pleased to learn that this is not likely to prove an insuperable one. The Corporation will in due time realise quite sufficient profit from the foreshore owners along the present reclamation to enable them to extend it ; and we learn that the contractor, Mr Saunders, has made a formal offer to the Corporation to continue the reclamation beyond the limits of the present contract to the extent of another £lO 000 to £15,000 worth, at the schedule rates of the present contract, and to wait for payment for a period of six months, or longer if necessary. This offer is a very favorable one to the Corporation, as the present contract was taken at, we believe, the lowest schedule rates ever paid for similar work in this colony. Mr Saunders having all his plant and men on the ground, has of course exceptional means for doing the work cheaply for the Corporation, as well as profitably for himself.

A rifle match is arranged to take place between the Carterton and Greytown Volunteers at the Carterton range on Saturday next, 6th inst, when the following members will represent Greytown, viz,—Captain Webster, Lieut Cameron, Lieut Porritt, Color Sergt Trotman, Sergt Willason, Sergt Gooding, Bugler Nelson, Vol Jury, Vol Tocker, Vol F. Collier, VolQ. Humphries. An accident of an unprecedented character took place on Sunday, on the Brancepeth road about a mile and a quarter from the Taueru. A huge tree (says the Star) came rolling down hill from a steep sidling on the Waipawa section, and, alighting on a 72 feet truss bridge, struck it heavily in the centre and knocked it into the gully beneath where it lies smashed in pieces. The bridge has only bean erected within the last few years at a considerable outlay. As the road is constantly in use Mr McKenzie, assistant County Engineer, and Mr Dawson, contractor, have proceeded to the spot for the purpose of erecting a temporary crossiog. A very absurd ease came before the Wel« iington B. M. Court yesterday. A young Chinaman named Ah Ling, was charged with having broken the 16th section of the Police Offences Act by selling two bottles of gingerbeer on Sunday, 24th January, “ the same not being a work of necessity or charity.” The reading of this portion of the information (says the Post) occasioned a roar of laughter, in which Mr Wardell, who presided, joined heartily. His Worship remarked that the case was the first of the kind which had ever came before him. The case was dismissed without being heard.

The proposition is said to be seriously entertained to arm the British infantry soldier with a shield. The new implement has a surface a foot square, is bullet-proof, weighs about three pounds, and is attached to the rifle. When skirmishers are thrown out they can thus carry their own cover with them, while, by fixing the point of the shield m the ground, they will not only be protected when firing, but will have a rest for their rilies.

There is no doubt the rain will do good to the grass country, but we think it has come too late to materially benefit growing crops, and may now interfere with the safe harvesting of wheat and oats, which is now iu active operation. During the earlier portion of the week, fruit —arming, perhaps, too abundantly —ruled at very low figures, but has since revived, although at present there is no margin of profit for shippers. The unusual occurrence of a mirage was observed oil the Australian Coast by the steamship Norkoowa, the now steamer which arrived in Hobson’s bay recently. For two or three days before reaching port Captain Raison reports that his vessel met with dense fogs ; which retarded its progress. The mist was at times very thick. Latterly appearances took the form of mirage. During its prevalence the most strange and misleading sights were seen. The waves assumed the aspect of gigantic rocks, all rushing together as though a mountain were falling to pieces. At times such structures as large square bams would be observable iu the atmosphere, then steeples of churches would present themselves in the most unaccountable fashion. The atmosphere at the time was muggy, and evidently charged with the electrical element. The objects that appeared suspended in midair took all sorts of colors, and the smoke from the funnel of the steamer assumed peculiar tints. Complaints are now and then received that the Standaiu> does not reach subscribers regularly. We have just come across a case where a subscriber's paper has gone wrong. It appears that some workm u nlo j o by have been iu llio habit of withdrawing it from the parcel when left at the station platform. Wo shall expose the pilferers if any tat) l ' o complaints are made.
