Senatorial Amenities.

Mr Ballance, in his recent speech at Wan* ganui, referred to Mr Vincent Pyke as “ a second rate politician.” Thereat poor Pyke waxed wroth, and rejoined in a letter to the editor of the Otago Daily Times as follows : ‘ ‘ When a third class Minister, such as Mi John Ballance, has the impudence to speak of members of Parliament as “ second rate,” he simply exposes bis ignorance, and furnishes another illustration of the accuracy of the proverb respecting climbing monkeys.” All this is very well, bat the fact remains that Mr Pyke “ is a second rate member ” possessing no influence in the House, while Mr Ballance has fought his way to the position of a Minister in a manner which reflects the highest credit on his industry, perseverance and ability.
