Mr Shaw’s Case.

Mb Edward Shaw, the well known barrister, was recently placed io an awkward but has fortunately got out of it altogether soatbless. Mr Shaw defended a libel action brought against “Alexander MoMinn,’’ whose name and fame our readers know all about. ** Alexander” was oast in damages aod costs, and sent a cheque for £B3 to Mr Shaw to pay the costs of the plaintiff in the action. Mr Bhaw delayed to pay the costs because the solicitors on the other side wanted to get the taxation of costs by the Registrar upset, so that they would get more money. Finally, “ Alexander ” came £3 Wellington, settled with the solicitors for the plaintiff, giving a bill tor the £B3. and then, without com* mnnioatiog with Mr Shaw, commenced a criminal prosecution against him for misapropriating the £B3. The charge againat Mr Shaw was dismissed, as it was found he bad ultimately paid the money to the plaintiff’s solicitor, and before that had kept it in the Bank as part of a separate trust aooount. Mr Shaw therefore got out of his difficulty. There seems to have been carelessness on the part of Mr Shaw, but nothing more. In connection with this case we note that Mr Shaw baa filed a declaration of insoloveney. We fancy, however, that in time things will be squared np, as while Mr Shaw's liabilities only amount to £1022, the Besets are set down at £B,BOO. We trust that Mr Shaw will get upon his legs again and once more attain a prosperous position. He is undoubtedly one of the very ablest men of the New Zealand Bar, while for general ability and acquired information few can vie with Mm.
