SPORTING.

(Bv Luiut-shown)

The weights Lr the t’ealherston Racing Club’s meeting appear to nave given general satisfaction, and I mu.-t compliment the handfcapper in having so ht] pily fnl.cn into th» nopnhr groove, as be has by that means established the success of the meeting beyond an a> utt. In : .et so nniietsal is the approval of the owners so ; t'.ain.rs tii >t some sc.-ptics arc even c> mmencing to Jon It if the same gentleman who handicapped fur MastertonOpaki has done the work. However, there can be no question about that, as it is only a griceful a"t to, as fir as possible, repair a preimu® error, and I am certain that the gentleman in quest; >u would not be in the WkgiLund in that respect. There is a feeling

abroad, and it possibly maybe an invidious one, that the Masterton-Opaki meeting will te an hollow affair, that although the

acceptances are for obvious reasons prettv fair, still many will be scratched at the pos*

and not appear in tun licinlty at ail. One owner assurre-i me to dav mat he could not

think of tending any from his stable to Opaki with the exception rf a sapling for the Piodaca Stakes, So of course it may be as well that is should be pub.iciy hi,own that such an oniidon i : prevalent. Anyhow, the FeaG.erstun people may now rest assured that they will have a good meeting and good competition fir their money. I was at Tauhercnikan yesterday morning but although many horses were dodging about, not much work was being done. I believe that the morning previous Mr Tancred gave his team a trial trip, with what re.-ults only himself and Ted Duckeridge, who was present, could disclose. On Ithe occasion of my visit, The Administrator, Gabble, and the Revoke Tilly were doing a morning parade. Greyhound put in an appearance at about 5 a.ra. and did some slow work to the satisfaction of his owner. Skipper did twice round in fair style, and the nag Rough Cut took a sweating. Mr Burt's Nikau than put in an appearance and did twice round on the plough, and Jeanette went a slow gallop. I had a look at j.oor Slave in his box. the boy, like the horse, seemed rather taciturn, and and answered questions in curt monosyllables and as gloom seemed to pervade the atmosphere, I retired to a more congenial spot; after ruminating upon the glorious uncertainty of that quadruped s limbs becoming

at all sound again on this side of Christmas As repose and tranquility appeared to bs the girder of things at Tauherenikau yesterday Bfcorning, and no one would come forward r even with Ike cndeanor to lead me off the scent or to take “ a double," I wended my way to Greytown with fond anticipation of getting a breakfast which my journey provided the appetite to dispose of. Finally I would like to quote the remarks made to me by a local sport, to the effect that if the races are shifted from Tauherenikau to Hades or Halifax they will never rub out Tauherenikau as a training ground, which I was bound by my conscience to endorse with that classical word ‘ kerrect.’

I have just seen the acceptances which

closed last eight for the principal events of the Lower Y'ailey meeting on Boxing Day ; and for the Flying, as the two top weights to the two hist Ugly Buck received Ist

have not accepted, the nest in order, 21ba more weight, and the others in proportion. Lifebuoy, Pilgrimage, and Gentle Annie will not put in an appearance at all, so as regaids the lirst nee my tip will be Gabble in a c inter, with probably Fawn or Theodore second. For the Handicap Steeplechase, as Claude has not accepted, ncr Seagull. I shall therefore select Lcch Lomond if Director Joes not go to the pest, For the L. V. J. C, aa only three have accepted, and I don't think Administrator will be there, I alull say Gabble as she likes.

A correspondent who signs as (Nordenfeldti, seeds us the fallowing remarks :—Tauhereuikaa just low is rather busy early and late, aa the vati.-us trainers are hard at work with their teams preparing for the forthcoming events. The several horses ■ow working on the Tauherenikau Course daily, are looking well, but nothing so gay and sound as The Administrator. The handsome son of the Premier looks tit to join issue for a man s life, and with many thanks to the consideration of the Wairarapa bandicappers, who take such care of him, ho is likely so to continue far a long time, as they don't seem inclined to over burden him with heavy weights ; and judging from the sample that are about Tauherenikau be has very poor cattle to meet. One old erock I noticed is Gentle Annie, who is as fat as a pig, with toes on her like mill posts, and it struck me the other day when I saw them trotting her round on the plough that they were using her for a mallet to break the clods for her betters. I don't think Opaki can be her game chasing Gst and Bst 101b ; she may be more at home cracking stones at Greytown. Another moke to suit the course on the plain is Nikan, who looks as if he was fed on dies, and had to catch them himself, but be hammers away like n nailer, so he

may do for diamond cracking, but his half sister Jeanette looks above that sort of and her owner being a good judge, will never think of working her over such country as the above ; but I ehould like to see her measure strides with the other youngsters in the Champagne Stakes on the Tanhereuiksa Course, should the stewards yet alter their names and run their Autumn Meeting there. Our correspondent; of course is welcome to give his opinions, but i tmust be under ton 1 that we Jo not identify ourselves with his remarks.—Editor Stasdaed.
