A Terrible Massacre.
The Bombay Gazette gives the following account of the massacre of uaiive Christians in Anam :—“ A member of the French Mission in Anam supplies some particulars of the horrible massacres of Christians that took place there in July and August. It appeais that of 11,000 Christians, 30,000 were massacred without distinction of age or sex. Though this is uot the ollicial annoimcemeut it is uot far from the truth. Details arc wanting, because there remains no missionary or native priest to give the neco sary intelligence. Five missionaries ate certainly known to be dead, and there seems to be but little doubt about the death of seven others. Communication is interrupted in all six provinces, aud it is impossible for fugitives to reach the shore at Qni-nhon, where they can obtain both shelter and relief. The bishop’s house, the two seminaries, the orphanages, 12 convents of Native runs, the 200 churches or chapels, and in short all the houses of the Christians, have been pillaged and burned. The massacre amounts uot to a mere persecution of Christians, but to a total extermination carried out in cold blood.” Some additional details are furnished by a special message from Paris to the New York Herald as follows “ The Superior of the college and the whole host of Christians have been slaughtered pell mell. Some were thrown into the sea with their hands tied behind their backs. Seme of the missionaries tried to make a stand with muskets, bat were soon defeated. General de Courcey promised to send a gunboat, which came to Quinhon after the place was burned down, and never fired a shot, owing to the absence of orders.”
