SPORTING.

LOWER VALLEY JOCKEY CLUB. A meeting of the members of this club was held at Orr’s Hotel, Maryborough, on Saturday night. Coleman Phillips, Esq., in the chair. The Secretary (Mr Dowman) read the minutes of the former meeting which were adopted. A deputation from the Featherston Racing Club waited on the L. V. club asking if the Lower Valley Club would amalgamate in running their races at Tauhcrenikau proposing also that two good days racing should be the result. There were a good number of members present, and the Featherston deputation were composed of Messrs W. O. Williams, K. Barton (secretary), and A. Butt. The first business of the meeting was to consider the proposals of the deputation which was introduced by Mr Williams. In answer to the Chairman the Secretary of the Featherston Club (Mr Barton), said bis club’s programme represented £IGO for last New Year's Day, and as the Lower Valley Club’s programme amounted to £340 last year the two amounts if amalgamated would have made the respectable total of £7OO.

Mr Phillips asked Mr Williams if be thuMit bis club would unite in bolding a meeting at Martinborough. Mr Williams replied that the Lower Valley liiui no properly arranged rourse. Mr Phillips thought that they bad every facility for forming an excellent course at Martinborough. Mr Williams observed that it would take some amount of money to make a thorough good course ; be questioned even if Mr Martin or any other gentleman presented the club with a piece of land for the purpose, if the club would be able to afford to complete the same in a suitable manner. He was satisfied that an excellent course could be easily made at Waihenga if funds were available for the purpose ; but the Tauherenikau course was Mr Barton said if the two clubs could combine to run at Tauberenikau they would no doubt attract many visitors from Wellington. Mr Martin raid Wellington people would attend their own meeting at island Bay which would be held on the same day (Boxing Day). What they should endeavour to do was to compel Mastodon to forego Boxing Day. Mr Williams said he did not thiuk that coni'’done.

Mr Martin would bn son ? if tbev could not be brought to reason. _ i Mr Phillips said that it was advisable Lett a strong club should be formed for the whole of the Lower Valley. A strong club and a good one would be a greater inducement b ,r owners to bring their horses ; the question then came where was the most suitable place to hold their meetiugs ; ho did not see why the two clubs should not form together and meet at Martinbnrough. Ho asked the on,a t ition, that, Supposing the Lower Vab'V Jockey Club did not agree to the proposal of the T'enlhorston Pacing Club, would there ho auy chance of tb- latter club coining to the views of the former. He would much deprecate auy ill fu ling in the matter, but would like to do the best for both parties. Mr Hurt could not say decisively how the club would feel in the matter until they had had a meeting.

The deputation then retired until the meeting had considered the proposals. Mr Martin in addressing the meeting said that he did not think Tauhereuikuu a particularly suitable place for a rucecouise, as considering the advantages it had alnady possessed it had not shown up extra well. Mr Phillips ; If it was out of the way for the Wairarapa Jockey Club, surely it would he the same lor the Lower Ya’h-y Club. Mr Hodge made a few reiiMiks to the same effect.

The meeting then unanimously agieid to the following resolution moved by Mr Maitiu, seconded by Mr Hodge, That this club thank the deputation for their comtesy, but it considers that tbo Tauhereuikuu course is too much out of the way. The mem hers of this club would he happy to amalgamate with the members of the T'oalherstou Club for the purpose of forming one strong club iu the Lower Valley, and they would he glad if the annual meeting could be held at Martinborough. Mr Williams explained that the reason he withdrew as a member from the Lower Valley Club was because although having a member's ticket exposed, the man at the gate, a few meetings ago, had persistently refused to admit him without paying gate money, having taken bold of Lis horses and stopped him from proceeding on to the course. Mr Phillips said he had heard the same complaint. Mr C. Harris, Mr Pain, and Mr Hodge said respectively, that one year that mistake did occur through some misunderstanding by the party who purchased the privileges. The deputation were then presented with a copy of the icsolution. The deputation, having thanked the raeet-

ing for its courtesy,{withdrew. Mr W. 0. Williams before retiring, said

that it was his opinion that the members of the Wairarapa Jockey Club generally had ' not desired to shift to Oreytown. He thought the secretary had most to do with the change, and then they had to hunt up Dr Smith to get the casting vote for a majority, and now the new course was a white elephant; he would like to ask the chairman whether as a member of the Wairarapa Jockey Club he liked the idea of being partly responsible for £SOOO. Mr Phillips said he was not much in-

terested, but he supposed every member was to an extent liable.

The meeting then proceeded to draw up a programme for next Boxing Day, (having resolved to adhere to that date for the meeting as usual) with the following result : Flying Stakes Handicap ofu mile, nominations Isov, acceptances Isov, £35 ; Handicap Steeplechase, lOOsovs ; Handicap Hack Eaoe, lOsovs, once round course post entry, 10s ; L.V.J.C. Nomination £l, acceptance 10s; Selling Euce (not post entries), 20sovs ; Martinborough Handicap, 30sovs. Nomination fI, acceptance 10a, 1 mile.

On the motion of Mr Martin secon.icd by Mr J. Hodge for this programme was adopted. The programme in full with all particulars will bo shortly published in the Stasuaw), and by posteta
