THIS GREAT OCEAN YACHT RACE
ENGLAND AND THE CAROLINE ISLANDS DISPUTE.
A PROPOSED ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION.
London, September 15,
The trans-ocean race between representative yachts of America aud England was won by America. The German Admiralty is at the present time engaged in the equipment of a special squadron for service on the Atlantic atation, and it is expected that the vessels will be ready for sea shortly. It is considered likely that Germany will invite the Powers to define annexation rules lor the Pacific.
It is currently reported at Cairo that Said Pasha, Grand Vizier of Turkey, has been ordered by the Sultan to visit Europe, but the news has not been officially confirmed. The English Government has announced that, so far as the purely commercial aspect of the question is concerned, England will support Germany in her pretensions to the Caroline Islands.
September 16. Admiral Sir Erasmus Omraanny advocates the equipment of a Government Antarctic expedition. The British Government have made a recommendation to Spain to accept the decision of an arbitrator in settlement of the dispute with Germany as to the Caroline Islands. Melbourne, September 15. Advices have been received here from Wilson’s Promontory stating that, at 2 o’clock this afternoon, Captain Thompson, of the Greenock steamship Gulf of Carpentaria, (1596 tons), arrived with the boats belonging to that vessel. He reports that the Gull of Carpentaria was bound from Newcastle to London via Adelaide, and while off Cleft Island she struck upon a rock not marked on the chart. The vessel became a total wreck, and sank in thirty fathoms of water within three hours of her striking. The crew took to the boats, and effected a landing at Wilson’s Promontory. The disaster was fortunately unattended by loss of life. Sydney, September 17.
The New South Wales Government has at present under consideration two proposals for the continuance of the Ban Francisco mail service, one emanating from the New Zealand Government, and the other from the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. The latter proposal is (ot a service independent of New Zealand control. A decision is expected to bo arrived at shortly.
