An Explanation.

To the Editor of the Standard. Sir,—Would you please insert the following remarks on a case of some interest to many of your readers; —ln your report of a case in the last sitting of the R.M. Court, Grey town, in which I appeared as a witness and H. L. Gray as defendant, it is stated that defendant put in a receipt for £2. He really put in two receipts for £1 each, one on each side of a siip of paper. The first quite agrees with the pound paid to my son, although his name does not appear on it, and which was the only money I believed had been paid. The second so puzzled .me in Court (as it does now) that he should have two receipts for one pound. I would have disputed it had not the writing appeared to be my own. The Court accepting Mr Gray’s statement that neither of the receipts represented the money paid to my son (which I deny) gave judgment, as in your report, remarking that that the case should not have been brought into Court. Neither would it if Mr Gray had shown the least disposition to come to terms by showing the receipts and paying the balance. If the matter of the second receipt Shows bad moilHJly un my jjm[, SO it (jut;s all round, or else Mr Gray has knowingly misled me. I have at various times during the last two years made the same claim as that put into Court without his making any objection, until within the last fortnight. So assured was I of the justice of the claim, that I thought he would only attempt to upset the case by some legal informality. 1 am, &c., John Wilkie. Greytown, September 14, iB6O.
