Concerning the Exhibition.

(I'roai our own Correspondent.) W Fi.r.ixtijon Wednesday. During the-pi?: week I Lave daily visitel the Industrial Exhibition and have thus gained a pretty fair idea of its main pr,i,„c 0 | interest. The Wehiugt >n pap. r .« have air - “ dune the Exhibition io deatu," by d-, C nl inn in minute detail everything which it contain--80 1 Wll } uot r° over old ground, but simniiscord the pecerai impressions which I haviformed about " the show.’ - It is undoubtedly a remarkab.y - ,M ui-pl..y of iccal industries and manutuctuus. Inert is scarceiv a single arnele which is manufactured in the colony. thdt is not to be seen in the various depart menu. I men by this, that everything produced from New Zealand raw matetiul by labor, and n;?-‘:irery. i- to be found amongst • the esnitdts.' tvili. tL- Exhibitr.n fc .. s .tb .., in p. in's, and there are a lew om.ssions tl mnott-.r.t aiti.xhe si. w U '\ l - 1 - muitabiv and ueiiCieiit. due New /le raud L oin a -id Mvicanthe Agency Ceinnaiiv soon specimens of w.,o' grain, andothcr nroducts L * it there is a dwidea lack of both quantity and variety, in tint direction. Natuiaiiv, i Wanted to inspect specimens . 1 wool from'the '• airarapa in this •• .-tana " of Exidi.its " put, bailing some li.egiiio wool, shown in a mtie ghss case by Mr Matthews, of the Waixarapa Like, I c, uid not lind anything else from your pan oi the country in the shape of wool. New Zealand abounds witti metal and mineral wealth, yet the inhibits under tl-at head were very limited. Then, thinking or the Grey town Cheese Factory. I went to Mr Cadis and askut where the cheese department was to Lc iVund. I was taken to a dreary upstairs loft, dirty and unswept, where t-rere were some cheeses and hams scattered about tiie Hour, ami a lot more packed in boxes. But there were no Greytown Factory ciieeses there. There were Wcodville cheeses and a lot from Canterbury and Otago. There were also Lams and bac-n from the same places, but the Wairarapa was altogether unrepresented. Indeed. I have made a careful inspection of the whole Exhibition and been grieved to discover that the Wairarapa district is scarcely represented at all iu it. There are two splendid buggies made by Mr Cameron, of Greytown, and Messrs Muir and Dixon of Masterton. 'ihere was a good exhibit of ginger beer, lemonade and cordials by a Masterton maker, some* “ worm powders ” from Carterton, and little else besides. Of course trie Frozen Meat Companies draw part of theii euppiles of tne raw material iu the shape of Cjdlow, frozen meat, preserved meats, and beef from the Wairarapa, but then exhibits do not go down to the credit W of the district. f liut having said all this, the main, broad fa d remains, that the Exhibition as a whole is credit to tiie colony. The display of goods manufactured from colonial raw materials is vaiu-d and splendid. The wooden goods, rugs, blankets, c.oths, liannels, and hosiery shown by the Mosgiel Woollen Factory ai d the Kaiapoi Factory are in every respect satisfactory. I lemf-mbcr being shown a varied assortment of Belgian manufactured tweeds by M. Je Uarven, who lately visited Wellington. But the Belgian tweeds and other cloths, though pleasing to the eye, were not to be corn pared fur beauty, elasticity and Wearing qualities to the New Zealand cloths shown at the Exhiidtion. I have no hesitation in saying that the New Zealand made clctLs. blankets, and ln.-sieiy, will veiy soon drive the ini| urte-i articles of the same kind altogether out of the coi.-nial market. Again, as to the marufactuie of leather, I was told iu every quarter by “ experts," that no bettor ioaihet of every kind anil description Ouind be produced m any part of the world, tn in the numerous samples exhibited by Mr Alfred iter, ui the Nrahauraiiga Tannery. I teett UeOVU :1 list * f ti.OSe exhibits, of which I win give you details in a future letter.
