Narrow Escape from Drowning.
On Friday last Peter McLaren and John Fraser had a very narrow escape from being drowned in attempting to cross tho Pahaua River while Hooded. It appears they were crossing some pack horses m the afternoon, about 3 o’clock, when hy some means or other, Fraser’s horsojin starting to swim, was washed over, precipitating him with a largo haversack, containing a quantity of bread lashed on his back, into the stream. Mr McLaren, who was close hy at the time, immediately sprang Irom his horse, and succeeded m catching him. The current being strong, they wore both soon swept down the stream, McLaren holding Fraser and making every possible effort to gain the bank, which he did in a very exhausted state, after swimming about 250 yards. It may bo state! that McLaren had a heavy ride lasuedou his back, and Fraser, being totally unable to swim, every credit is due to him for the plucky manner in which ho rescued Fraser from being drowned. The pack horses and riding horses in the meantime bad succeeded in crossing tho river and had to remain there two days harnessed till a neighbour chanced to come that way and drove them back.
