THE CUSTOMS AND (EXCISE DUTIES BILL. The chief business in (lie Hon,re of Bopresentatives on Monday was the consideration of the Customs and Excise Duties Bill, tin piovisions of which we refer to in one of our articles to-day. There was some opposition to the increased duty on Australian' wine, and Mr Joyce twitted Mr Wakefield with seeking inspiration from that 'beverage, while writing “ the Hermit of Island Bay.” Sir Julius Vogel said Australian wine was a usury, tlm whole sameness of which he doubted. Ultimately the increased duty was agreed to. The duty on unmanufactured tobacco was also agreed to, and ultimately the whole Bill was adopted as it stood. Some other Bills wore advanced a stage, and the House rose rose at 1.20 am.
