CARTERTON v GREYTOWN. A football match is ft wry exciting aifnir, morn especially to the spectators, many oi whom at times loose their heads and grow hoarse in shouting to the players. The match on Saturday between Greytown ami Carterton had an attraction beyond the fact that the rising club at Carterton had come down to play a game on the Grey town ground ; there had been several days’ rain and there was a charm in looking forward to the sight of thirty men rushing after the hall covered with mud from head to feet. It was a very enjoyable sight to those who took the trouble to walk over to Steward’s paddock, and in addition to this the game was com tested in all fairness and in a most friendly spirit. Unfortunately for Grcytown we noticed the absence of Webster, Cameron, Tocher, Wenham and Desmond, live good men, from the team, and at the commencement of tho game it looked as though the Carterton men wore going to score a win. When the teams took tho field Greytown only had thirteen men, but tho full complement was made up before the game had proceeded far We would like to see the Greytown Club adhere to punctuality when a match is arranged. When a hotly of men from a distance are kept hanging about waiting for the homo team to turn up. it does not look well, and is vexatious. Every man should be on tbo ground sharp and welcome the visitors in a body. The Carterton men were captained by Mr 0. Fairbrother, and the following comprises the team : forwards, F. Peters, T. Moore, A. Moore, C. Roid, Mercer, Ginders. Smith, Jv. and 0. Fairbrother, Ewen ; Qr backs, Humpqries, lluthcr/ord ; Half back, F. Fairbrother ; full back J. Moore. Greytown, forwards: W. Humphries, H. Humphries, C, Heard, B. Udy, H, Mitchell, T. Fisher, J. Maguire, H. Udy, and Tinga ; quarter-backs, A. Udy. Hirschberg. and J. Hoard ; half-backs, A. Heard and D. Haillio ; full-back, J. Terry.
Our space prevents us from giving the details of the game. It was a warmly contested ami well conducted match and occupied two spells of hull an hour each. From first to last it was a series of scrimmages, very little loose play being indulged in. On three or four occasions it looked as if the Greytown team would ho victorious, the play la ing kept pretty close to the Carterton goal. The only chance given, however, of kicking a goal did not result in a score. On the part of Carterton for some good points, we may uuutiou Rutherford, Ewen, Smith, and F. Eairhrother ; the latter player belongs to Wellington and ho is well known as one of Wellington’s best footballers. For Greytown, Beard collated well, while Gus Hirschberg and Alt Udy were very smart upon their pins and bad to bo watched with jealous care ; J. Terry, 11. Udy and B. Udy had some good oppor (unities for a display and they proved themselves quite able to taking advantage of it. Messrs T. Wnkelin for Carterton, and F. W. Jackson fur Greytown, acted as umpires, Mr Seed as referee, and when time was called no score bad been made on either side. The usual cheers were given at tire close of the game and the players and spectators dispersed well pleased with the afternoon’s sport.
