The Featherston Volunteer Ball.
The most ardent well wisher con’d not fail to be satisfied with the success of the Rifle Volunteer Ball at jFeatherston, on Friday night. The Oddfellows’ Hull was crammed wita dancers and their friends, and many were the wishes expressed that the room was just double the size. This Hall is not a small one, but it is Weldon in the Wnirarapa that such a gathering takes place as that of Friday night. Very often at Greytown the soil css are largely attended, but the residents of Foatherston on this occasion responded most admirably to the appeal of the volunteers, and their funds should be considerably enhanced thereby. Altogether without one word of exaggeration, the large company, which must have consisted of quite eighty couplas besides non-dancers, most thoroughly enjoyed the procceedings. One tiling this valley eau always command, and that is a good quadrille baud ; on this occasion Messrs Lundqvist (violin) Parker (the local professional) piano, and M. Varnham, cornet, discoursed the music in excellent time and tuue. The refreshment department which was under the direction of Mr and Mrs AVorseicy was ail that could be desired. Mf Butt supplied the pastry and confectionery of excellent make, and ladyresidents prepared the jellies, blancmanges, Ac. Indeed, iu times to come. Feathorstou may often be the scene of as happy mid enjoyable a gathering, but Friday night's affair will not easily be surpassed. .Major Bunny, Lieuts Bntnskill, (acting captain) and Donald, and Thompson, (from Mustertou) were present and the noncommissioned officers and volunteers of the Featherstou company, by appearing in their bright scarlet uniforms, lent a most pleasing and appropriate effect to the scene. Messrs Speakuiuu, Barton, and several other gentlemen acted as M.C.’s AVu were sorry to see the Greytown and Carterton Companies on tiiis occasion almost entirely unrepresented ; perhaps the active exercises which were being carried on for the review may have been partly the cause, AVc wish to thank Colorsergeant Kemp (the hall secretary) for the courteous attention extended to the press.
