Thk position of affairs between Great Briinm and .Russia has become very critical, and it is quite possible; that war may be the result. Evidently the gravity of the situation is fully recognised by the British Government, as Her Majesty has informed Parliament of her determination to call out the militia and embody the reserve. This step lias never been taken by the British Government unless war with a Foreign Power was thought to be imminent. Not the slightest reliance can be placed on any peaceful declarations made by Russia at the present juncture. It has ever been the practice of that Power to keep on professing the moat peaceful intentions, even while only awaiting' the moment to tear off' the mask and declare for war. So it probably is in the present instance,
