General News.
A cablegram from London, dated January 13th, says : —“ Doubters of the progress in strength and tactics of the Salvation Army should have been in Exeter Hall last evening, where the crowd rivalled that at a Drury Lane Pantomime. General Booth was in the chair, and his son stood beside him. An uproar of applause that must have boon heard in the stalls of the Vaudeville greeted the rising of this tall, thin, sallow, full-bearded, and Cromwellian-haired enthusiast, who with his thin clarionet voice, announced that this was a farewell meeting to thirty officers, chiefly women, who were to he despatched as recruiting sergeant sot the Salvation Army to America, New Zealand, and India. The General has under organ- 1 isation an Army corps in every Lritish village, which will barrack in vehicular caravans, and be guarded at night by sentries. One of the Army, a celebrated cricketer, stood near the General, and, referring to him, Month said : ‘ He goes to India to guard the Salvation wickets against the swift bowling of the Devil.’ This remark was received with howls of applause, the audience keeping time with wellknown and weird music, or with songs.” They seemed animated by a fanatic zeal* truly Oriental in looks and gesture.”

A pot of musk will always keep a room free from flies. Twenty-five pounds of poultry droppings make sufficient manure for an acre of corn land. Who shall say how much illness i kept off the household and the stock by "cod drainage round the farmhouse ■—and how much sickness and disease arise from its neglect ?
